This Lab Stress Tests Homes of the Future in EXTREME Conditions!

We know homes need to be more efficient and sustainable – but how do things like insulation, ventilation, sustainable building materials or renewable energy sources actually solutions get tested and how do we know if they’re actually going to make a difference? Energy House Project 2 at Salford University has the answer!

In this episode we visited they’re very unique testing facility which puts new homes and home energy technology through their paces. Inside, two environmental chambers capable of accommodating two detached houses, recreate a wide variety of weather conditions with temperatures ranging between -20˚C to +40˚C and simulate wind, rain, snow and solar radiation.

Lorna McAtear, National Grid: Busting myths on EVs & the Grid | The Stop Burning Stuff Podcast

This International Women’s Day, Quentin engages in a compelling conversation with Lorna McAtear, Head of Fleet at the UK’s National Grid and Joint Chair of the Association of Fleet Professionals.

During their discussions, Lorna shares the benefits and challenges she has experienced in transitioning to an electric fleet, and gives an honest appraisal of how the 21,000 vehicles in National Grid’s fleet have fared in relation to commonly held beliefs about EVs, such as battery efficiency and degradation, tyre wear and fire risk.

Quentin also takes the opportunity to quiz Lorna on the Grid itself; whether it will be able to cope with the growth in demand for EV charging, how it is being future proofed, and what is holding us back from decoupling gas and electricity pricing to reduce electricity costs for consumers.

In the UK, we need to install 8 million heat pumps over the next decade and will need some 27,000 additional technicians in order to do so to reach net zero. Given the volume of work left to do, we’re asking why is it that only 3% of those working in the trades, such as plumbers and electricians, are women? We spoke with Leah Robson from Your Energy Your Way who is ensuring renewable energy training schemes are not only fit for purpose, but infinitely more inclusive.

Today her workforce sits at 50:50 men and women and in this podcast we discuss the challenges and opportunities created by striving for equal opportunity and attracting the tremendous volumes of people needed to power the clean energy transition. Enjoy!
